Why a Summer Staycation Bucket List Actually Works

What I’ve found is that without a plan, summer just sort of happens. The weeks slip by and before you know it, September’s knocking at the door and you’re thinking where did it all go?

A summer staycation bucket list gives you something to look forward to. It turns an ordinary Tuesday into a little event, and the best bit? You’re in charge of every bit of it.

So grab a cuppa, mi darlin, and let’s get into it.

The Summer Staycation Bucket List: 20 Ideas to Try at Home

1. Set Up a Proper Outdoor Cinema Night

This has to be one my favourites, it’s a summer staycation classic for good reason. All you have to do is string up some fairy lights, grab a good projector or even just position your telly near a window, pile up the cushions and blankets and you’ve got yourself a proper outdoor cinema experience.

Pop some popcorn and pick a summer film you love, you’ll find it’s the kind of evening that feels dead special and without costing a fortune.

2. Have a Garden Picnic With All the Trimmings

I don’t just mean a sandwich on a blanket, luv, I mean the full works. Think proper picnic basket, a spread of deli bits, some homemade lemonade and maybe a cheeky glass of something cold.

If the garden isn’t your thing, a blanket in the living room works just as well. The vibe is everything.

3. Try One New Recipe That Feels Fancy

I usually choose a recipe that feels a little bit grown-up and holiday-ish, like a proper paella. A Greek salad with homemade dressing. Something that smells incredible and makes the kitchen feel like a little restaurant.

You don’t have to be a chef, you just have to be willing to try something new.

4. Create Your Own Spa Afternoon

This is another one of my favourites on the summer staycation bucket list and honestly it doesn’t take much. Run a bath, pick up a face mask and a gorgeous bath soak and turn your bathroom into a proper retreat.

Pop on a playlist, light a special candle and turn your phone off. You deserve an afternoon that’s just for you.

If you fancy turning it into a whole weekend thing, pop over to my post on how to transform your home into a spring spa retreat there’s loads of ideas in there that work just as well in summer.

5. Host a Garden Cocktail or Mocktail Hour

I always try and pick three recipes and print them out, some can be more complex that others so it’s best to have the recipes to hand. Simply set up a little drinks station with garnishes and fancy glasses. Invite a friend or just enjoy your own company, both are valid.

There’s something about a well-made drink with a slice of orange and a sprig of mint that makes an evening feel proper special.

6. Have a No-Screen Morning

Now, now, hear me out. I’m asking you to give one morning, just one, where you don’t reach for your phone first thing. Make a proper breakfast. Sit with your coffee and watch the garden- No garden? Open a window, breath the fresh air in and see what’s going on outside through the glass.

It sounds simple but blimey, it changes the whole feel of a day. This is what holidays do to you and you can have it right at home.

7. Visit a Local Attraction You’ve Never Been To

Every town in the UK has at least one thing you’ve never actually got around to visiting. It could be a nature reserve, a museum or a heritage trail. It could be a farm shop that’s been on your radar for months.

Just pick one and go. Take your time and buy yourself something from a local shop. Treat it like a proper day out because it is one.

8. Do a Proper Star-Gazing Session

Wait until it gets dark. Grab a blanket and lie on the grass or lean out of an upstairs window and just look up.

You could always download a free star-gazing app beforehand so you can actually identify what you’re seeing. Stellarium Mobile is widely considered the most accurate and “realistic” planetarium tool.

9. Make Homemade Ice Cream or Lollies

This is one of the most fun things on the summer staycation bucket list and it genuinely delivers. Mango lollies. Strawberry frozen yoghurt. Chocolate and peanut butter ice cream bars.

My kids used to absolutely love this when they were little and honestly, it’s just as satisfying doing it for yourself now. All you need is some fruit, a blender and a set of reusable lolly moulds ,honestly one of the best couple of quid you’ll spend all summer

10. Set Up a Reading Nook and Actually Use It

Find a corner, add a cushion, a small lamp and a little side table for your drink. Declare it your summer reading spot and spend at least one afternoon there properly escaping into a book.

It sounds indulgent but that is really the whole point.

11. Have a Summer Baking Day

Who doesn’t love a slice of lemon drizzle cake in summer. Baking is something that fills the house with the best smell in the world and gives you something to feel quietly smug about afterwards.

Baking is also one of those activities that takes you out of your head for a few hours and that’s worth a lot.

12. Rearrange a Room to Feel Fresh

This is the one on the summer staycation bucket list that people underestimate. A room that feels a bit different can completely lift your mood. Simply moving a chair, swapping a cushion or adding a plant or two.

It really doesn’t need to cost anything. It just needs a bit of intention and it’s always easier than you think.

13. Watch the Sunrise (Just Once)

Set your alarm early, and watch the sunrise. Make a flask of tea beforehand, find a spot with a decent view, even if that’s just your front step.

The world feels like a completely different place at that hour and doing something like this at home feels genuinely adventurous.

14. Host a Garden Games Afternoon

Oh to be young again! Rounders in the park. Giant Jenga on the patio. A quiz around the garden table. These are the kinds of afternoons that people actually remember.

You don’t need a big group. Even two or three people makes it an event.

15. Make Your Own Summer Playlist

I’ve spent hours curating the perfect summer playlist. You might just like to hear it in the background when you’re pottering around, it just makes your summer feel more continental.

16. Write in a Journal

I know, I know. Bear with me. You don’t have to be a writer, just jot down a few things each day this summer that you want to remember, “What you did. What made you laugh. What the weather was like. I like to use a beautiful hardback journal – just makes it feel like a proper ritual rather than a chore.

Come autumn, you’ll have a little record of your summer and it’s a proper lovely thing to have.

17. Try a New Type of Exercise Outdoors

Yoga in the garden, all you need is a decent Yoga mat, or how about a long walk to somewhere new. A bike ride you’ve been meaning to do for ages or wild swimming if you’re near water and feeling brave.

Summer is the best time to move your body in ways that don’t feel like exercise and it’s spot on for both your physical and mental health.

18. Have a Proper Slow Sunday

Pick one Sunday and protect it. The only plan is planning to do nothing and definitely no errands or cleaning! Have a late breakfast. Watch a good film. Go for a walk if you feel like it or a nap if you don’t.

This is genuinely one of the hardest things on the summer staycation bucket list for most people. But it might be the most important.

If you need a nudge on creating proper rest at home, my post on summer staycation ideas for adults is a good place to start.

19. Create an Outdoor Dining Experience

Set the garden table beautifully, I mean properly beautifully, with a couple of outdoor lanterns, nice plates and real napkins. Cook something that takes a bit of effort and eat it outside as the sun goes down.

It’s the kind of thing you’d pay a lot of money for on holiday. At home it costs the price of the ingredients and a few candles.

20. Make a Summer Memories Box

At the start of summer, find a box or a tin, and then all summer long pop things inside it. It might be a cinema ticket stub. A pressed flower or a photo you’ve printed. Even a note you’ve written to yourself about a funny moment.

At the end of summer, go through it with your partner or friend or on your own. This is the kind of thing that costs nothing and means everything. It’s the whole point of a staycation bucket list, it’s about making memories not credit card debt.

How to Use This Summer Staycation Bucket List

I like to print mine out and stick it on the fridge. Or you can download a free checklist template and tick things off as you go. The goal isn’t to do all 20 in one summer, although do you not think that would be something? it’s to do enough of them, making this summer feel like it belonged to you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Summer Staycations at Home

What is a staycation bucket list? A staycation bucket list is a curated list of experiences and activities you want to enjoy during your time off without leaving home or travelling far. The goal is to create proper holiday memories using what you already have around you.

How do I make my staycation feel like a real holiday? The key is intention. Set the scene. Plan activities in advance. Turn your phone off during certain times. Cook something special. Create moments that feel deliberately different from your everyday routine. Small details make a huge difference to how a staycation feels.

What are the best free summer staycation activities at home? Star-gazing, watching the sunrise, visiting local parks and nature reserves, having a no-screen morning, setting up a garden picnic and starting a summer memories box are all completely free and genuinely brilliant.

How many items should be on a summer bucket list? There’s no rule, but 15 to 20 is a sweet spot. It gives you enough variety to keep things interesting across the whole summer without feeling overwhelming. The aim is excitement not pressure.

Can you have a staycation without a garden? Absolutely. A balcony works brilliantly for outdoor moments. A sunny living room window creates a lovely reading nook. Local parks count as outdoor space. A flat with a good kitchen is perfect for a baking day or spa afternoon. You don’t need a garden to have a brilliant summer at home.

A Final Word

Summer goes fast. It always does, mi darlin, but a summer with a plan even a loose, lovely, flexible one, feels fuller and richer and more like something you actually lived rather than something that just happened around you.
