This Post is all about the Armchair Globetrotter’s guide to a world staycation.

If you’re craving a change of scenery but your budget, schedule or energy levels say otherwise, then a world tour staycation is one of the most fun ways to satisfy your wanderlust without spending a fortune on flights. Bringing a little bit of the world into your own home can be surprisingly satisfying.
One of my favourite ways to start planning is with a World Map Scratch Poster. It’s affordable, looks lovely on the wall and gets you thinking about places you’ve visited and destinations still waiting on your bucket list. Before you know it, you’re planning a weekend of adventure without setting foot near an airport.

Quick Shop: World Tour Staycation Essentials
The beauty of a world tour staycation is that it isn’t about pretending you’re somewhere else. It’s about capturing the little things that make travel feel special. It might be different foods, new music or just a change of routine. It’s those moments when life feels a little less ordinary.
Why a World Tour Staycation Works So Well

When I worked in the hotel trade, I noticed something interesting. Guests rarely talked about the size of the room or how expensive their holiday had been. What they remembered were the feelings like a beautiful breakfast with a view or sitting outside with a drink as the sun went down. It might have been discovering a local dish they’d never tried before and loved it.
A world tour staycation gives you permission to step outside your usual routine. You slow down, try something different and create little experiences that feel memorable. Best of all, you can do it for a fraction of the cost of a traditional holiday.
Here’s How….
Planning Your World Tour Staycation

Pick Your Destinations
The secret is not trying to do too much. Choose five to seven countries that genuinely interest you and build a small experience around each one. Think food, music, films, décor or activities. You don’t need to recreate an entire country, just a few thoughtful touches go a long way.
Create a Travel Itinerary
A Travel Journal makes the whole thing feel much more special. Use it to jot down your destinations, the recipes you’d like to try and films you want to watch. It sounds simple, but having a plan makes the weekend feel like a real trip rather than just another couple of days at home.
Italy at Home

Bring the Amalfi Coast to Your Garden
Italy is all about enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Slow lunches, good food and long afternoons spent doing very little at all.
A traditional Picnic Basket Set is perfect for creating that relaxed Italian atmosphere. Fill it with fresh bread, olives, cheese and a chilled drink, then head out into the garden. Even if the weather isn’t exactly cooperating, you’ll still get a taste of that laid-back Mediterranean feeling.

Japan at Home

Create a Calm and Mindful Escape
Japan makes the perfect stop when your world tour staycation needs a slower pace. Open the windows, clear a bit of clutter and give yourself permission to switch off for an evening.

A gorgeous little Japanese Tea Set adds a lovely sense of occasion and encourages you to slow down and enjoy the moment rather than rushing through it.
I’ve always loved sushi, but living where we do, there aren’t many places nearby selling decent sushi, so when the craving hits we’re pretty much on our own. That’s exactly why we bought a Sushi Making Kit in the first place.
What started as a practical solution quickly became part of the fun. There’s something really satisfying about learning to make your own sushi. The first few attempts might look a bit wonky, but that’s half the entertainment. By the end of the evening you’ve created a meal you love and learned something new at the same time.
Finish the evening with a Japanese film- Spirited Away (2001) is absolutely the nicest and most magical film to watch or if you prefer a realistic drama over fantasy, Shoplifters (2018) is a beautiful choice. Take the Japanese Tea set. A Sushi making kit and a good film, and you’ve got yourself a proper little Japan at home escape,
France at Home

Enjoy a Parisian Café Afternoon
France doesn’t need elaborate planning. Sometimes the simplest experiences are the most enjoyable. Pop on some French jazz and pretend you’re people-watching from a Paris café rather than sitting in your back garden.
A French Press Coffee Maker instantly turns an ordinary coffee break into something that feels a bit more indulgent. Fresh coffee, a pastry and half an hour with a good book can feel surprisingly luxurious.
If you need help choosing a good book, my Free Printable book list might be just what you need. You can grab it Here.
When it comes to the food I have to laugh because I’d always heard how incredible French cuisine was before visiting France. Years ago when I travelled with work, I arrived in France and went to a restaurant with a set menu, I was really looking forward to my dinner. The starter arrived- a dead crab floating in dishwater-looking soup. Blimey, it proper put me off, I couldn’t eat it, felt awful for leaving it but us Yorkshire folk just aren’t used to such delicacies !

The funny thing is, when I think about France now, I don’t think about the crab (well only sometimes) I remember sitting outside with a coffee, watching the world go by and soaking up the atmosphere. That’s why a French-inspired stop on your world tour staycation works so well. Skip the questionable seafood and focus on the bits you actually enjoy.
Greece at Home

Bring the Islands to Your Table
Greece is one of the easiest destinations to recreate at home because the food does most of the work for you.
A Blue and White Table Cloth instantly gives your table that classic Greek island look. Add grilled chicken, feta cheese, olives and plenty of fresh lemon. Tzatziki is also a very traditional Greek dip, perfect for dipping bread- here is a nice recipe it you fancy making your own. Play Zorba the Greek dance music and and you’ll feel transported somewhere much sunnier.
The best part is how simple it all is. No complicated recipes or stress, just fresh food and a relaxed atmosphere.
India at Home

Add Colour and Warmth
If Italy is about slowing down, India is about bringing a bit of energy and vibrancy into your staycation. You can transform your space though smells and lighting, for example burn some jasmine incense or light some Diya’s candles for a genuine Indian inspired atmosphere.

I love these Mango Wood Serving Trays they make a beautiful addition to any table and add warmth long after your staycation is over. Serve a homemade curry in authentic curry dishes along with naan bread and a few sharing dishes presented on the tray.
After eating you can immerse yourself in either a Bollywood night or recreate an ayurvedic wellness spa to balance your bodies energies (Doshas) by giving yourself a warm coconut Head massage and then unwinding with some chai.
Now you’ve got an evening full of flavour. The colours, aromas and atmosphere make this one of the most immersive stops on your world tour staycation.
Morocco at Home

Create a Cosy Riad Feel
Morocco is all about atmosphere. This is where you can have a bit of fun with lighting and décor.
A Moroccan Style Lantern creates beautiful patterns around a room and instantly makes the space feel cosy and inviting. When I worked in interiors and flooring, lighting was always one of the quickest ways to transform a room and this is a perfect example. Add a pot of mint tea and a few Colourful floor cushions, if like the cushion covers below, you will need to get the Cushion inserts separately.
Mexico at Home

Turn Dinner Into a Fiesta
Not every destination on your world tour staycation needs to be calm and relaxing. Mexico is your chance to bring the energy. A Bluetooth Speaker is one of those purchases that gets used again and again. I picked up this Wireless Bluetooth speaker on Amazon for under £22, it’s waterproof- so ideal for outdoors if the weather changes. Now just put together a lively playlist of traditional Mexican music like Mariachi or Banda for that true Mexican feel at home.

Serve tacos, homemade guacamole and salsa along with tortillas and sides of your choice and suddenly the whole evening feels like a celebration. For mess free taco eating you should try these Taco Holders for extra convivence.
Sometimes all you need is good food and good music. For more summer entertaining ideas, you might like to have a go at creating your own cocktail bar at home.
New York at Home

Create the Ultimate City Break Evening
Every world tour staycation deserves at least one city stop, and New York is perfect for it.

A Movie Night Popcorn Machine turns an ordinary film night into something much more memorable. This Gadgy Pop corn Machine makes Fat Free Oil Free Gourmet Popcorn, simply pair it with a classic New York movie and a giant pizza and you’ve got a simple but brilliant evening ahead. It’s fun, slightly over the top and exactly what a New York-inspired staycation should feel like.
The One Splurge That’s Worth It
Create an Outdoor Cinema Experience

If you’re going to spend a little extra money anywhere, make it here.
A Portable Projector with Netflix Included creates an experience you’ll use throughout the summer. Imagine sitting under the stars with a blanket, snacks and a film set in one of your chosen destinations. It feels far more special than watching television indoors and creates the sort of memories people actually remember.
