Small Balcony Must-Haves That Turn Your Outdoor Space Into a Staycation Sanctuary

You Don’t Need a Big Garden to Feel Like You’re on Holiday

If you’ve got a tiny balcony and been wondering how to make the most of it, then this one’s for you.

These small balcony must-haves can completely transform even the most unloved concrete ledge into a spot that feels like a proper summer staycation.

When me and my husband were house hunting for our first home together, we walked into one place that had a small balcony and that was it. Done. We didn’t even look anywhere else. Proper love at first sight. We moved about 15 years later but that balcony gave us so many good memories and it started with just making it a proper little space worth being in.

I spent years working in interiors and furniture sales and I can tell you. The difference between a space that feels good and one that doesn’t usually comes down to a few smart buys. Not hundreds of them. Just the right ones.

Start With Somewhere Comfortable to Sit

This is non-negotiable. If you haven’t got comfortable seats on your balcony then you won’t actually use the space. Full stop.

For small balconies the best option is a Folding bistro set. Two chairs and a little table. It takes up barely any room and you can fold it flat when it’s not in use.

We had a one like this 3 Piece wooden Folding Patio Bistro Set which looked a lot more expensive than it was . Today they come in at just under £120 with cushions included, they’re weather proof too so will last you years and genuinely change how much time you spend outside. If budgets constraint or you’re looking for something simpler, then this lovely Bistro set in sage green or pink at just under £69 and looks just as gorgeous.

Add an Outdoor Rug to Ground the Space

Woven Balcony Rug

This sounds like a small thing but blimey it makes a difference.

An outdoor rug instantly makes a balcony feel like a proper room. It gives the space boundaries. It makes it feel intentional and it adds warmth underfoot when you’re out there barefoot with a coffee in the morning.

Look for one that drains quickly. I Love this Outdoor flatweave rug . It works with everything and makes the whole space look put together while also easy to clean and weather resistant. These are one of the best small balcony must-haves because they’re affordable and the impact is massive. You’re looking around £23-£28 for a good one and they’re easy to roll up and store over winter.

Lighting Makes or Breaks the Evening Vibe

Balcony Fairy Lights

This is where your balcony goes from nice to actually magical.

Solar fairy lights are the thing. String them along the railing or overhead and just like that you’ve got atmosphere. It really was magical the first time I did this. I Sat out with a glass of something cold and honestly it felt like I was somewhere else entirely.

You can get a decent set of outdoor solar fairy lights for well under £10 and they’re one of those buys that punch way above the price. Check out this Pair of beautiful solar fairy lights which are less than a tenner and they only need to charge 6-8 hours during the day and can work 8-14 hours in the night, no wonder they have sold more than 25,000 on Amazon.

Bring Out Some Greenery

Plants make a balcony feel alive. They soften the hard edges and add that holiday-at-home feeling instantly.

Go for easy grow plants that like the sun. Lavender is brilliant because it smells incredible and it’s practically indestructible, Trailing plants like lobelia and ivy look gorgeous spilling over the edge of lovely flower pots.

If you want something that looks proper lush then these  4 Piece Metal Hanging Plant Pots are a brilliant buy for your plants. They clip onto your balcony rail and around £18 they look so much better than your average plastic pot.

If your balcony gets full sun this is a game changer mi darlin.

A Compact cantilever parasol with fairy lights gives you protection from the sun and lights up in the evening making it extra special at night. Around £90 and honestly it’s one of those small balcony must-haves you’ll wonder how you lived without.
